India - Nagaland & Arunachal Pradesh Photo Tour.
Join us on a fascinating photographic adventure to visit India’s vanishing tribes.
The Tour.
Join Nathan on an exciting new tour of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, two of India’s most remote northern regions, as we document the fascinating traditions of the Apatani and Konyak tribes while they still preserve their ancient ways of life. Our extraordinary journey through India's remote northeastern states begins in Delhi before we fly to the secluded Ziro Valley of Arunachal Pradesh.
Here, nestled among pine-clad hills, we'll encounter the fascinating Apatani tribe, renowned for their unique cultural practices and remarkable agricultural expertise. The valley offers exceptional opportunities to photograph their innovative rice-cum-fish cultivation methods and distinctive terraced fields that have drawn the attention of agricultural scientists worldwide.
We'll spend several days immersed in Apatani village life, photographing the elderly women with their characteristic facial tattoos and nose plugs – a vanishing tradition that will soon be lost to time. The villages of Hong, Bulla, Hari, and Hija provide intimate settings for capturing authentic moments of daily life, traditional ceremonies, and the strong community bonds that define Apatani culture.
Our journey continues to the Mon district of Nagaland, home to the Konyak tribe, once feared headhunters of the region. In villages like Hongphoi, we'll photograph the elaborately tattooed former warriors and document their rich cultural heritage through their intricate woodcarvings, traditional attire, and the beating of log drums in their community halls known as "Morung."
A highlight of our exploration is the village of Longwa, uniquely positioned on the India-Myanmar border. Here, we'll meet and photograph the Angh (king) whose traditional house straddles two nations – one half in India, the other in Myanmar. This presents a rare opportunity to document a traditional power structure that still holds authority over villages in both countries.
The final leg of our journey takes us through the lush tea gardens of Assam. We'll rise before dawn to capture the ethereal morning light as it filters through the mist while tea pluckers begin their day's work. Along the mighty Brahmaputra River, we'll photograph the vibrant riverside life, ancient temples, and the timeless relationship between the river and its people.
This is a perfect opportunity to document and preserve the vanishing traditions of Northeast India's remarkable tribal cultures.

How we travel.
-
Boutique hotels
Accommodation is a key element of any tour and we have gone to great lengths to secure luxury hotels in amazing old havelis, heritage buildings, luxury tents, and even royal retreats to enhance your sense of being in Rajasthan. Unlike many other tours, we assume you will want a private room to yourself.
-
Charming rooms
We do not charge a single-person supplement but we do offer a discount if you choose to share a room if you are travelling with a partner or friend. We are very competitively priced, but we don’t cut corners on accommodation; on the contrary, others can charge more for less, and we have no hidden costs.
-
Fabulous locations
Although you deserve a rest, most of our hotels and restaurants also have photography in mind. You can photograph interesting things within the building or outside from a good vantage point. Our restaurant choices always have an exciting menu, and we consider your good health a primary concern.

Rajasthan Indian photography tour.
An adventure plus a learning opportunity. We travelled from Jaipur, to Udaipur, through small villages, larger cities, the desert, the forest area, visiting local markets, water wheels, various temples - all the while capturing daily life. Nathan has excellent connections and persuasion skills, thus enabling photographers to take pictures of holy men, ladies young and elderly in brightly coloured saris, children playing, locals dancing, animals roaming the streets - the variety of photo circumstances continuous throughout the days and evenings.
Nathan engages with each photographer, offering his experienced assistance and suggestions - to capture the perfect photo! Tour workshops are of exceptional value. Local guides are outstanding. Ash is an accomplished guide with excellent attention to detail, whose goal is that we enjoy and learn about "his India". Ash is personable and customer oriented - with an ability to read customers and ensure our needs were met.
Bhanu is very knowledgeable, with an aim to please, always attentive, willing to help out, clarify and/or carry parcels, cameras, backpacks. He has a terrific sense of humour and patience. The bus drivers were incredible - negotiating extremely busy and sometimes horribly bumpy streets and roads, traffic going every which way, between cows, camels, pedestrians, tuktuks, motorcycles, cars and tata trucks - all the while ensuring our safety and comfort. Nathan has a desire for us to seize the heart of India via photography, and to enjoy and take these new skills on other adventures, Nathan Horton Photography tours - a class act!
