India - Vanishing Tribes Photography Tour.

Join us on a fascinating adventure through three of India’s most remote states.

The Tour.

Join Nathan on an extraordinary journey through India's remote northeastern states, documenting the fascinating traditions of the Apatani and Konyak tribes while they still preserve their ancient ways of life. This carefully crafted photography tour takes us through three of India's most secluded northern regions – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Nagaland – offering rare access to cultures that remain largely untouched by the modern world.

Our adventure begins in Delhi before we fly to Itanagar and journey onward to the secluded Ziro Valley of Arunachal Pradesh. Here, nestled among pine-clad hills at an elevation that creates a natural sanctuary, we'll encounter the fascinating Apatani tribe, renowned for their unique cultural practices and remarkable agricultural expertise. The valley offers exceptional opportunities to photograph their innovative rice-cum-fish cultivation methods and distinctive terraced fields that have drawn the attention of agricultural scientists worldwide.

We'll spend several immersive days in Apatani village life, photographing the elderly women with their characteristic facial tattoos and nose plugs – a vanishing tradition that will soon be lost to time. The villages of Hong, Bulla, Hari, and Hija provide intimate settings for capturing authentic moments of daily life, traditional ceremonies, and the strong community bonds that define Apatani culture as they practice their ancient Doniy Polo animism.

We then head to Majuli, the world's largest river island, formed by the mighty Brahmaputra River, where the cultural capital of Assam offers a fascinating blend of spiritual and tribal heritage. We'll explore ancient Vaishnavite monasteries (satras) where monks perform traditional rituals, visit the renowned Chamaguri Satra to photograph master mask-making artisans, and document traditional pottery-making in nearby villages. The Mishing tribal communities welcome us into their stilt houses along the river's banks, where women weave intricate textiles on traditional handlooms, providing rich opportunities to capture the intimate rhythms of island life.

Continuing into the Mon district of Nagaland, we'll meet the Konyak tribe, once feared headhunters of the region. In villages like Hongphoi, we'll photograph the elaborately tattooed former warriors and document their rich cultural heritage through their intricate woodcarvings, traditional attire, and the beating of log drums in their community halls known as "morung."

A highlight of our exploration is the village of Longwa, uniquely positioned on the India-Myanmar border. Here, we'll meet and photograph the Angh (king) whose traditional house straddles two nations. This presents a rare opportunity to document a traditional power structure that still holds authority over villages in both countries, as we hear stories from some of the last surviving headhunters.

The final days of our journey immerse us in the lush tea gardens of Assam. We'll capture the ethereal morning light as it filters through the mist while tea pluckers begin their day's work. Along the Brahmaputra River, we'll photograph vibrant riverside life, ancient temples including the impressive Jagannath Temple, and explore the bustling Graham Bazaar to document authentic scenes of daily commerce and community.

This is a perfect opportunity to document and preserve the vanishing traditions of Northeast India's remarkable tribal cultures before they fade into history.

Tuition.

On any of our tours, stunning photography is the name of the game, and our objective is for you to leave with a collection of images that you'll be proud to show off. Indeed, many of our past participants have gone on to win awards and competitions with photographs taken on our tours.

Nathan’s teaching approach is very hands-on, as he believes in learning by doing. He will guide you through technical challenges, provide artistic inspiration, and lead by example in approaching locals for great portraits. You'll be amazed at the striking and authentic images you'll be able to capture.

We also offer Lightroom workshops during our tours, where we cover workflow management and picture processing. We'll show you the tools to take your travel photography to the next level and provide tips on saving your pictures for various outputs like social media, e-books, and printing.

If this is your first tour with us, you can also join Nathan’s pre-tour workshop, designed to equip you with essential skills for travel photography. Covering technical competence, creative observation, and ethical responsibility with a focus on people and culture, this workshop is perfect if you’re new to travel photography or need a refresher. The workshop runs on the first day of the tour from around 2-5pm. Enhance your photography skills and capture breathtaking moments to treasure forever. Apply via our tour request form and prepare to take your photography skills to the next level.

How we travel.

  • Typical hotel room on Nagaland tour

    Best available rooms

We are very competitively priced and don’t cut corners on accommodation, but, due to the off-the-beaten-track nature of this tour, we are the first to admit it doesn’t offer outstanding hotel rooms. However, we have gone out of our way to secure the best available in each location, and we hope you will be pleasantly surprised. We do not charge a single-person supplement, but we offer a discount if you choose to share a room when travelling with a partner or friend.

  • Typical customer transport on Nagaland Tour

    Ideal Transport

Using the Toyota Innova, we always give you a window seat so you can appreciate the views and jump out quickly if there is anything you want to photograph. We find the generous seats are big enough to keep your camera bag conveniently close, your personal luggage safe in the back, by limiting the number of photographers to three per vehicle.

  • Typical tent on the Nagaland Tour

    Luxury camping

In Mon we have opted to stay in luxury tents, in preference to basic hotels which are the only other option. We find the tents are comfortable and add to the spirit of adventure. An en suite bathroom is included and hot water bottles are available upon request if the temperature drops.

Tour Grading

Each of our tours combines a distinctive mix of experiences that may appeal to you in different ways depending, for example, on your fitness level or what you hope to get out of the journey. We’ve created a simple chart grading each tour across seven key elements, and you can see the details of this tour below. Clayhaus - Feb 2026

There are so many highlights on this new Nathan Horton Photography Tour with opportunities for serious cultural, street and landscape photography. Every day provided us with new and interesting subjects to photograph from gorgeous sunrises (and sunsets!) to tribal peoples in traditional settings to bustling street life. The tour visits three northeastern states: famed Assam, land of the renowned black tea with acres of tea plantations to photograph in; Arunachal Pradesh, home of two ancient tribal groups that appear more akin to Himalayan cultures than Indian; and the highlight of the trip, Nagaland, on the Burmese border and land of the Konyak tribe and its aging, vanishing headhunters. Whether you are new to people photography, or comfortable with it, Nathan will guide and assist as needed. This was my 15th tour with Nathan Horton and is certainly one of his most memorable. I highly recommend photographers see these vanishing peoples whilst they can. The world is changing too quickly!
